product description Deck boards ACCOYA

Accoya wood ranks among the best products in the wood industry. Thanks to the patented method of treatment of Monterey pine (Pinus Radiata), which belongs to the group of fast-growing soft woods, a product is created that surpasses hard woods in many ways. Learn everything you need to know about Accoya wood in our blog post.

What is Accoya?

Accoya represents a unique wood product – stable, sustainable, modified wood of the future. This is modified wood, which is produced by the patented method of acetylation of Pinus Radiata pine, i.e. by chemical modification of wood without the use of biocidal substances.

The chemical structure of the wood is modified from the surface to the center and thus the resulting product acquires properties that predetermine it for a wide range of uses even on a commercial scale. Accoya is dimensionally stable, resistant to wood-destroying pests, non-toxic. The wood can be fully recycled, as no chemicals are added to it during acetylation.

The durability of Accoy allows its use not only for terraces and facades, window frames, but also for pedestrian walkways around water bodies, for load-bearing visual structures.

Thanks to its properties and attractive appearance, Accoya is a favorite material of architects and designers around the world. The wood used to make Accoya is sustainably sourced and processed using low carbon footprint technology, making Accoya environmentally friendly. It thus actively contributes to a circular economy based on biotechnology.

What is the durability of Accoya wood?

Accoyi's expected lifespan is at least 70 years, as verified by the Trada association, the leading internationally recognized authority on wood. Accoya withstands all weather conditions well, be it rain, sun or hail, and can be used even in extreme climates. Accoya is UV resistant.

Accoya wood has withstood a long-term testing process where it was exposed to all types of weathering – above ground, underground and even in water. Accoya has durability class 1 (EN 350-1 and EN 335-1). In this aspect, Accoya surpasses even Burma Teak.

Accoya is strong and dimensionally stable. Swelling and drying is reduced by at least 75%, there is no deformation. Doors and windows can be opened year-round without effort, possible smaller gaps between tiles. The patented production process does not weaken the strength of the wood and, on the contrary, increases its strength. The resulting strength of the wood in relation to its weight makes Accoya wood suitable for demanding architectural projects.

Thanks to these properties, the manufacturer gives a 50-year guarantee against rot and decay where there is no contact with the ground. In contact with the ground and in water, the warranty is 25 years.

Is Accoya rot resistant?

Accoya is highly resistant to wood-decaying fungi and insect damage, including termites and waterborne wood-destroying pests. This makes Accoya very resistant to rot.

How easy is Accoya to work?

Modification of Accoya wood does not have a negative impact on its machinability. The patented method of the acetylation process permeates the wood evenly from the surface to the center, giving Accoya wood its unique properties.

Accoya is relatively easy to process and can be compared to profiling soft woods. No special tools are needed for cutting, planing, milling and drilling. Surface sanding for final finishing is very rarely required on Accoya. No need to use chemical preservatives after cutting or planing.

What are the insulating properties of Accoya wood?

The natural insulating properties of Accoya wood, its durability and reduced maintenance requirements make it a sought-after material for facades and cladding. Its use is therefore ideal in implementations where energy saving is required.

Does Accoya need to be painted?

Because Accoya wood has a very high resistance to wood decay fungi, it is a popular choice for use without surface treatment. It naturally weathers to a silvery gray color due to the physical and biological processes that take place in the upper layer.

The rate of weathering and the resulting discoloration will vary depending on the amount of UV radiation, building altitude, surroundings, installation details (especially related to ventilation) and the surface texture of the boards. Accoya wood turns gray at a similar rate to most other woods.

If you prefer the original color, you can surface treat Accoya. Common paints can be used to finish Accoya wood. A suitable coating will increase the resistance of Accoya wood, compared to ordinary woods, the treatment will last significantly longer.

What is the recommended method of mounting Accoyi?

To fasten Accoya wood, it is recommended to use products made of stainless steel A2 or high-quality stainless steel A4, which comply with EN 10088-1. PU, epoxy and PRF adhesives are suitable for gluing. Bonding with MUF D2/D3 PVA is not recommended. D4 adhesives can be used for mechanically loaded joints.

Can you burn Accoya wood?

Whenever possible, recycling is preferable to burning because Accoya wood is 100% recyclable. But if recycling isn't an option, you can safely burn Accoya wood just like untreated wood. The German research institute Wilhelm-Klauditz-Istitut (WKI) confirmed that, unlike chemically impregnated wood, no other toxic substances are released during combustion.

Is Accoya environmentally friendly?

Accoya wood is a truly sustainable choice for the future. From the extraction of Pinus Radiata pine from sustainable forest management with FSC certification, through the entire patented production process, to eventual disposal at the end of its life, the entire cycle is fully ecological.

Accsys Technologies' position actively supports the fight against high CO2 emissions, the patented production process contributes to a low carbon footprint. Accoya wood is 100% recyclable and, unlike aluminium, PVC or composites, does not harm the environment.

During the patented production process, Accoya is not enriched with any chemical or toxic substances, therefore it can be reused and recycled. Accoya wood has FSC and Cradle to Cradle gold certification and is the only building material to receive C2C Platinum certification for the health safety of the materials.

Accsys Technologies' prestigious reputation for sustainability starts with raw material sourcing. Accsys Technologies only uses wood from FSC-certified forests, which must demonstrate that they are managed in an environmentally friendly, socially responsible and economically viable manner.

Where is Accoya made?

Accoya wood is produced by Accsys at its plant in Arnhem, the Netherlands, where it converts fast-growing, certified sustainable wood into Accoya wood through its patented acetylation process.

Since its launch in 2007, this durable and versatile material has become the choice of hundreds of manufacturers for applications in homes and buildings for windows, doors, patios or cladding. Some of the most architecturally significant projects in the world take advantage of Accoya's unique properties and attractive appearance.
